Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) are caused by ingrown hairs. This condition usually occurs in individuals with tightly curled hair.
As the hair brakes off at the surface (or is plucked/shaved), further growth causes the hair to grow into the follicle. This backward growth causes inflammation resulting in a small 'bump.'
In darker skin individuals, the bumps may result in hyperpigmentation, scarring, and irregular skin tone.
